Hi to both of you
Via your mails to René we have been following your great trip around Asia . Got a bit worried for you in Sulawesie and the malaria scare, but all is well. We were in Sulawesie several years ago and enjoyed the Toraja area but didn't go further north of the lake as there was quite a lot of problems at the time. Borneo sounds pretty good except for the palm trees!!!
When we left you at Maumere at the start of your trip across Flores, we carried on, on our "four wheels" (far less tiring) crossing over the island a little quicker than you both and then took a boat to Rinca and Komodo and then on to a "Robinson Cruseo Island" in the middle of nowhere for a couple of days. Fantastic, good snorkelling and no noise....
Then onto Lombok and the Gili Air by local buses and ferries, quite an experience as you can imagine seeing the state of the transport provided!!!!
We finished our trip by visiting the different areas of Bali ending in Ubud then Jimbaran before flying back to France.
Difficult to get back to the daily routine...what will it be for you.....!!!! and just longing to get the packs back on our backs again.
Great having news of your trip which we follow with interest..
Good "pedalling" and hear from you again soon.

Hello Adi,
just read your last post and I feel very sorry, that you're not that happy/cheerful/satisfied at the moment.
I know palmoil plantations and also dislike them deeply: monotone landscape instead of rainforrest and also, the palmtrees give no relief from the heat, seem to absorb all freshness of the surroundings. My partner and me were travelling on a motorbike from Austria to SEA and back for 1 1/2 years and, although we did exactly what we wanted to, we were not happy all the time. Most of it, yes, but not every each and single day. When you choose to travel by your own transport, there are always regions one has to spend time where others just pass through by an overnight bus or just fly over it. Sometimes the experiences are rewarding, sometimes... well, we could also do without it!

Hello Susi,
The 60 days visa are indeed extentable...if you have somebody who sponsors you for it. Pamela informed me that it was official 240k rupiah to extend. That's the part the immigration office will take. Then you obviously have to pay whomever is sponsoring you. We did our extensions with the New Legend Hostel in Makassar. I'm sure there are other hostels around who'll do it. But it's more or less word of mouth information. We have known about it that way, but once there, the hostel manager immediately offered extension services without us asking.

came across your homepage when doing some research on the Thorntree for our next trip to Indonesia. Having been to this fascinating country several times, I was very surprised to read, that you were able to extend your visa - so far I thought, this is just not possible and that you have to get out of the country every 2 months!
You did seem to have had this information before - who told you about that? And then, in Makassar, was it simple and how much did it cost? Where else is it possible to get visas extended, is it limited to some cities?
I'm so curious and very much looking forward to your response - and actually very delighted, that it is possible to get an extension at all!
Good to hear, you got rid of your Malaria, so far at least. Might come back though:,my partner got Malaria once on Pulau Weh and it did come back several times. But the good news: the outbreak got weaker from time to time and after I think 5 times, it was over and never occured again.

Generally speaking, that sounds quite like an undertaking. I'm usually not a accommodation reserver, but in your case I'd do it. Some towns only have a couple of hotels and we did indeed come across a few that were booked out. And that was before the main season. Also, keep in mind, some of the stages are VERY tough, even for an adult. Would the kids be carrying gear? Hi there I came across your site today while researching a possible cycling trip through Indonesia we are planning with a couple of other families. I was particularly interested in your travels through Flores I had heard it was pretty hilly but until I saw your site I didn't realise just how steep it is. Do you have any feel for how difficult a trip it would be for 7 adults and 8 children aged 5-12yrs? The younger children would be on tandem mountain bikes with an adult (5-7yr olds) the remainder 9 and up would be on their own mountain bikes. Beside the actual cycling up very steep mountains I was wondering about finding accommodation in each town for this many people. Any thoughts or advise on other sites that may be useful. malaysian borneo is nice and kind of organised compared to where you are now. as i remember it's not really a backpackers place, more family tourism, which I guess doens't hurt you that much... anyway, you're to experienced to complain about other tourist, I thought...

Hi,
I feel very worreid and concerned to read that you did not take anti malarials in any of the Indonesia east of Lombok. This area is known to be highly malarial.
And even if yuo feel ok now there is nothing to say that the malariaa will not return.
I still believe you should check yourself into a good hospital in Sulaswei sometime and have a blood test.
Malaria kills people so easily and quickly.
Please take my advice.
I feel very very concerned.
I never take anti malarials in java or sumatra or Aceh because the mozzies don't like me but next yr when I go east I will be takiing Malarone every bloody day.

Hi,
I stumbled over your website while trying to find out whether it is feasible to travel overland from Thailand to India and clearly it isn't unless we go via Vietnam, China, Tibet, Nepal or Pakistan. We sort of don't have the time to go overland as we are doing a project in a hospital in Herbertpur and have dates we have to stick by. Seems like an amazing journey though! Just another query, obviously you are independent traveller but if we are on a time frame would you recommend a tour (gecko) from KAthmandu back to India as I don't see we will be able to fit in all the destinations if we decide to make our own way.

We are a Swedish family that has just come back from our 6 months trip around the world. We had the time of our life!!!
We have now, at many peoples request, started to write a book about our experiences but mostly about what made them possible. The idea with the book is to inspire other people who are considering travelling to follow their dream and really go for it.
In the book we would also like to include other peoples experiences of travelling in order to give more inspiration for the reader. For this reason we are looking for people who would be willing to answer some questions.

Belém, the capital of Pará, with 1.144.000 inhabitants, on the south bank of the Amazon, which only one degree lies south the equator and 145km far away from the open sea, is the gate to the Amazon. The city represents an important port at the lower Amazon, which is accessible for high sea-going vessels and which possesses a fleet base of the navy. It was created 1616 by the Portuguese and remained to a large extent isolated up to the center of the 19.Jh. from the remainder of the country, since it was attainable on the sea and river way only. Du hast es wahrscheinlich geahnt. Ich habe Pushkar ebenfalls nach einer halben Stunde geHASST.....und das Gefühl hat sich immer weiter verstärkt. Bin deshalb gleich am nächsten Abend mit dem Bus nach Udaipur (das war ganz nett, obwohl der See halb trockengelegt ist) und hatte am Ende noch 5 schöne Nächte am Strand in Palolem (Goa). Deshalb haben wir uns dann leider auch nicht mehr getroffen. Nun bin ich wieder zu Hause in D. Gute Reise weiterhin! |

indonesia is really a great place, even if the dry season isn't that dry at all! so many great activ volcanos and crater lakes... and such a big diversity from everything like religion (5), people (220 mio), islands (about 13-17 000) and espessially languages: I always thouhgt we have many in switzerland, but here the have between 300 and 500! and really not similar to each other.. enjoy your stay, nostrovya (oder so aehnlich ;))! |

First of all: that post of yours has some excellent statements. Some of your feelings after your first big trip are completely identical to mine. Including impressions of best friends. That's quite amazing. As for South Africa: I'll tell you about it as soon as I have been there! ;) Work: Well, I'm a Creative Media Director. I still am working on my BA in Multimedia Arts and plan to go to Perth to finish my studies. Luckily this kind of works allows to attend school and still make some cash - which allows me to travel. I also started a few projects here in Switzerland, that might allow me to work on the road (with a laptop) and make some extra travelling cash. That would be the best case scenario. Wow, quite good posts over the weekend. Well Jenny, I guess all kinds of people can become somewhat snotty. I'd say, if the life style of your freinds is travelling, then they haven't done it enough - otherwise they wouldn't place themselves and their experience over others'. People who have become wise, don't brag with it. Modesty is a virtue. However, I think I kind of comprehend their attitude. I believe too, that usually travellers have a more concious way of living. Not all, of course - but many. While travelling, you're less distracted with issues, that are actually nonrelevant to our lives; matters that have been forced onto us by the modern western society. Thoughts become often a little more profound and philosophical while travelling. This doesn't mean, that a traveller eventually becomes a 'better person'. I mean, when you attempt to climb Mt Everest, just starting doesn't mean you necessairily make it to the summit either, right? Give them some more time, they might become more tolerant again. At the same time try to be as tolerant, as you wish they'd be. ;) If you want to converse some more...use the contact form and leave you email address. I'd be glad to... |

However, I don't really think it's age, because I'm really young and went on a trip...had a perspective change and more confidence...like I had more evidence and witnesses supporting things I do. Of course travelling changes my outlook onto the world. As an example: most 'problems' people have here are silly (if not to say pathetic) compared to the problems I've seen abroad. But I don't want to go into that, because I believe, that it is merly a matter of perception - and perception changes with time, experience and so on.
What I think has really changed during my travels is the self respect and confidence. I didn't really change my views completely, I have always been a 'free-thinker', but after coming back from my first long trip, it was much easier to just be what I am, without caring much what society thinks of me. That's also what my best friend confirmed. Well, maybe that's part of 'getting older' - dunno. But I always connected it to my travels.

This is not meant to be offensive, if anyone is offended, I apologise in advance, it is not my intention;
My friends have, for the past ten years, worked, saved, travelled, worked, saved, travelled. I envied them until recently. Just over a year ago, they couldn't wait until they'd saved enough for their next trip, so they sold their cars, house and every asset they had and took off on a rtw trip, intending to keep travelling until the money ran out. Well, the money ran out and they're back. No home, no money, no jobs, nothing. They're both in their 40's. Their chances of employment have diminished. They're both in receipt of government unemployment benefits (which I DO find offensive) and are planning their next trip. They are extremely defensive to anyone who dares question their wisdom in doing what they have done, to the point of verbally attacking anyone who's opinion differs from theirs (no matter how nicely it's put to them). They have admitted that their experiences place them above the boring, mundane 9-5 workers who never leave their suburb.
They'd been away for a year, and at the 'welcome home' party we had for them, the talk was focused soley on their travel experiences. It was becoming slightly boring. When anyone else tried to talk about other things, it was met with bored dis-interest. EXCUSE ME, but we've sat and listened to what's happend in the last year in YOUR life, well guess what, things happened in OUR lives too, are they less important??

...for your interest, wishes and tips. As I mentioned it before: it makes the trouble for this website worthwile. As for Paolo, no, I do not really feel lonely out here. I agree, most issues are out range to talk about here. There is little understanding for certain things and just to mention it, this has nothing to do with the people themselves, but their cultural and economic background. But if you are dealing with the rat race in Europe, it's OK to have some time out once in a while. Time to reflect - spare time that is hard to find while living in Europe (or the US that is). I couldn't do without these times spent alone. And if it really feels lonesome after a few days without talking to anybody, there's always someone to be found if you look hard enough - also because there are plenty of western tourists out here in Asia. So if I feel the need to 'share', I go back to cities or more touristic areas, like just now in/around Puerto Galera. But I hate it already. But it's conveniently close to Manila. Will write in the diary another day...Adrian |

Gehe 2 Wochen auf Bali. Habe trotz dem Terrorakt absolut
