Trip summary
This This was a typical Easter trip. I haven't been away since Kenya, the weather was bad as usually during this season in Switzerland. I had to get out - yet again. The year before I've been to northern Italy, but this time it had to be further. Hence, me and my firend bought train tickets to Lubljana, Slovenia. From there we intended to make our way down to the Mediteranean coast.
The overnight train to Lubljana was packed with immigrants which wanted to visit their families back home and very few tourists. We were lucky and had a train going down south two hours later. But this new train ride was excellent as the train drove slowly and the landscape and towns could be observed thoroughly. Once we arrived we managed to catch a bus to the coast, although we weren't really sure if the bus would go where we wanted and where we had to get off, as neither the dirver spoke English nor we Slovene. Anyway, we arrived and spent a night in Piran, which is a beautiful, laidback costal town. I can imagine though, that it might be quite packed with tourist during high season.
The next day we wanted to go further South and cross into Croatia. As it was a holiday weekend all public transport was cut short. Therefore we decided to hitchhike over the border. There were lot of cars, but many of them were Italian, germane or Swiss tourists and didn't pick us up. Eventually we got our ride and made it to Porec - another coastal town, a little bigger this time though. Here we stayed at a private house for three days.
Leaving Porec turned out to be a lot harder than we thought. We left the town in the morning to catch the train back to Zürich from Lubljana in the late evening. Soon we discovered that there was no public transportation at all this time. Hitchhiking was also very tough and we slowly got used to the idea of missing the train. At last, after several short rides and close to the border between Croatia and Slovenia we got a ride to the next major town in Slovenia. While driving the guy asked us jokingly, if we wanted to go to Verona (Italy) with him. Considering the fact, that we probably will miss the train in Lubljana anyway, we quickly decided to change the plan and go with the flow. That's how we ended up in Verona, stayed a night there and made it back to Switzerland the next day by train.
