Eventhough if I try to travel as unconcerned as possible, certain
information is crucial. Before I travel to a country I read online editions
of local newspapers. This provides a good view on the current situation.
In certain countries the media has to be dealt with critically, of course.
In such cases, I also follow that subject in the western media.

The time table is tricky to figure out, in large cities there are several stations, the staff does usually not speak English and is often impatient (this ranges to quite out rude). So, here is a quite reliable site with some information on russian train schedules. This does not safe you from queueing up, but at least you can write down the train number ahead - and you know the train DOES run and from which station. |

1'500 kilometers later...
...and we have left the flat parts of China behind us. We are now in Qinhai Province and on the way to the Tibetan Plateau.

In the past couple of months we have cycled over 1'700 kilometers in the flat parts of China: from Vietnam we were heading east to Hong Kong. From there we took a train to Zhengzhou in Henan Province. Now we are heading west. We have now left the flats behind and have reached Gansu Province. From now it's all uphill!
We have created a video about the first part of riding in China. Watch it on our YouTube Channel or directly on the video page of my website.
